MACq 01 – Hobart

Opened in June 2017, MACq 01 is one of Hobart’s newest and most unique luxury hotels. Nestled on Hobart’s iconic historic waterfront, MACq 01 hotel offers an immersive storytelling experience, with each room telling a story of one of 114 colourful characters who has influenced the evolution of the Tasmanian culture. Native people to inventors, explorers, convicts and heroes all inspire and connect guests with a meaningful sense of place. With Tasmania’s largest hotel rooms, 27 luxurious suites (some with rooftop terraces) even come with the personal MACq 01 butler service.

A hotel of informal luxury.

At MACq 01, offers a variety of rooms and suites, each characterised by a generous floorplan and high-quality fitout. MACq 01’s style of luxury is relaxed and informal – less about Egyptian cotton sheets and fine crystal glassware and more about comfort, warmth and culture. The giant leather lounge suites may be top-of-the-range, but they were built for afternoon naps – not tea parties.

Stories are to be experienced – it’s all in the delivery.

Connecting guests with the stories of Tasmania underlies everything we do. This is reflected in the hotel amenities and service style, but also take it one step further by offering a Master Storyteller with his team of full-time storytellers.

Adventure with a drink and a full belly.

The ground floor of MACq 01 is home to The Story Bar, Old Wharf Restaurant and an atmospheric Lounge. The Story Bar is inspired by the egalitarian nature of Tasmanian society where class divisions are less obvious, and so offers a drinks list ranging from local draught beer to the very best wine and spirits.

The Henry Jones Art Hotel – Hobart

The Henry Jones Art Hotel is a fusion of history and modernity, art and design, indulgence and discovery. Australia’s first dedicated art hotel, the Henry Jones merges one of Tasmania’s most significant industrial heritage sites – H. Jones and Co. Pty. Ltd. IXL – with sleek design and contemporary Tasmanian artwork to create a sophisticated and deeply engaging accommodation experience on Hobart’s waterfront.

H Jones & Co.’s legendary brand ‘IXL’ dates from approx. 1895 and is said to originate from Henry’s personal motto “I excel in everything I do”. In 1919 Henry Jones became one of the first and few Tasmanians to be knighted, and 10,000 mourners crowded into Cornelian Bay cemetery to show their respect when he passed away in 1926.

The Henry Jones Art Hotel has 52 Rooms (and four Suites), each individually designed and furnished. Sleek modernity complements untouched heritage features, nineteenth-century sandstone walls frame contemporary Tasmanian artworks, and traditional windows reveal views of Hobart’s harbour, city, and mountains. Luxury fittings adorn every room, with comfortable king size beds draped in exotic silk covers and ottomans. Most rooms are equipped with European style stainless steel and translucent glass bathrooms and feature harbour or mountain views, while others overlook the stunning all-glass atrium revealing sunny glimpses of the historic jam factory interior.

Hear our History The history liaison Greg Ball explains the rich history of the property down to the finest of details. Why the in-house herb garden is shaped into Peacock feathers, or why the shade cloths in the atrium are shaped as original jib sails from the first colonial sailing ships. Remnants of stories are uncovered like the unfinished carvings in the timberwork of the grand staircase or the original fragments of the 1800s wallpaper that Margaret Peacock had attempted to cover the industrial sandstone with inside their family home.
